Blanca Flor Cordova is third-generation coffee producer from Cajamarca. She began cultivating coffee at the age of 22 under the mentorship of Fredy Bermeo Guevara, her husband and father of their four daughters. Blanca has gone on to hone her coffee production skills and her dedication to the craft has led to the recognition of her coffee as being some of the best in the country. In 2022, Blanca won the Cup of Excellence, scoring an incredible 90.39 points.
La Bola Farm, located in the San Pedro de Churuyacu village, of the Tabaconas District, in the famous San Ignacio Province of the Cajamarca region. The farm is a 100% organic and managed by Blanca Flor Cordova and her family. The farm spans 8 hectares and grows a variety of high-quality coffee varietals including Red Geisha, Yellow Caturra, and Pink Bourbon.
The farm employs agroforestry systems with organic farming practices. Within this agricultural system they grow guavas, naranjillas (a type of orange/lemon), bananas, yuca, and also use pine and native tree species for shade.
Over the years they have crafted and designed a natural and washed fermenation that they use for all their coffees. With the help of Experimental Seed, who we sourced this coffee through, Blanca and her family are happy with their chosen approach, for their Natural ASD (anaerobic slow dry) it's as follows:
Experimental Seed is a project founded by coffee professional, Paolo Blas. Paolo is part of the new wave of coffee professional in Peru dedicated to elevating Peruvian specialty coffee to new heights and to share the flavours all over the world. He has professional qualifications in pre and post harvesting which he learned in Lima and since then worked for larger farms in the North of Peru before settling in Jaen and starting Experimental Seed, where he now works with some of the best coffee producers in Cajamarca.
Their role as an association and buyer is to offer training, assistance and a channel for international sales to those they work with. With Blanca and family they have been working together since 2017 and they like to work long term and at ground zero where the potential to grow together is vast. With Blanca, they started working together when Catimor was the only varietal being cultivated and a basic washed fermentation and drying was in place. Since then, they've come a long way together and this is an example of the long term collaboration in effect.
We met Paolo through Ebert Huaman at Finca Artemira. When we were in Jaen, we cupped at Paolo's lab and from then kept a relationship. We worked with Paolo last year through sourcing Finca La Bola for Prodigal Coffee in the US and Craft Coffee in Hong Kong. As both roasteries spoke highly of the coffee we decided to bring some over to the UK this year.
Blanca and her family know the impact that high coffee prices can deliver and they want you to know that this type of coffee is contributing a lot to their local economy. It's inspiring neighbours to start investing more into specialty coffee and sustains their commitment to sustainable farming. They want to continue in this way so that it opens up more opportunities to those in their rural communities.
