About this Coffee

Who is Idelsa Ojeda Rodriguez?

Idelsa Ojeda Rodriguez is a coffee producer from Chirinos, San Ignacio, Cajamarca, with over 40 years of experience in coffee cultivation. She is part of the La Prosperidad Cooperative where we sourced this coffee from.

Together with her husband, they have worked the family farm and planted several varieties of coffee, including Paches, Bourbon, Geisha, and Caturra. Idelsa is passionate about coffee cultivation, and since 2020, she has focused on improving the quality of her coffee to create a sustainable and profitable crop.

More recently in 2024, Idelsa’s is now part of the La Prosperidad network of farms who are Regenerative Organic Agriculture (ROC) certified.

About Idelsa Ojeda Rodriguez and Her Farm

Idelsa’s farm spans several plots, including El Derrumbo, El Zapote, and La Yhamila, located in the Chirinos District, San Ignacio Province and Cajamarca Region. The farm sits at an altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level and focuses on cultivating coffee under agroforestry systems that contribute to soil health and biodiversity.

Idelsa’s farm integrates coffee cultivation with native shade trees like pacae, avocado, and blackberry trees, which support the local ecosystem and provide natural protection for the coffee plants. The use of shade trees also fosters a healthy environment for wildlife. The farm uses only organic fertiliser which is created La Prosperidad at their central base and office in the town of Chirinos.

The practices that Idelsa follows are all part of the recent initiative from La Propseridad to achieve the ROC certification for their members farms.

How was the coffee processed?

Similar to the agronomy, La Prosperidad recommend a tried and tested coffee process for their members. Idelsa follows this approach and it's as follows:

  1. Selective harvest of only the ripest cherries
  2. Overflow and floating to detect defects and impurities
  3. Coffee is then pulped and fermented for 18 hours
  4. Coffee is then dried in solar dryers until 12% moisture

The role of La Prosperidad for this coffee?

La Prosperidad play a vital role in processing, supporting, and marketing the coffee produced by Idelsa and other local farmers. With over 54 years of experience, the cooperative provides its members with the necessary resources to improve coffee quality and reach international markets.

How does Khipu Coffee know La Prosperidad?

We visited La Prosperidad in Chirinos in November 2022 and sourced a number of different lots for the 2022/23 harvest. Since then we have kept in touch with the team and always looked to find ways to support their work where we can.

This coffee was offered to us from Michael, the General Manager, as a credit to us for warehousing a coffee for them in early 2024 and also finding a buyer for a coffee that a roaster decided to not go ahead with, once it landed in the UK. We asked for a coffee that he would like to send us and they offered us this lot from Idelsa.
